PMDiane Cabral, PresidentPresident's Message
There isn't anything else that is more important to the life of a Rotary Club than bringing in new members.  Other areas such as attendance, good programs, and interesting and meaningful club activities and projects can't go on without an energetic and growing base of members.  New members are critical just to prevent the club from shrinking and becoming ineffective.  We have seen it happen in other clubs as well as our own.  It is a proven fact that a Rotary Club will lose a minimum of 10% of its' membership a year to changes in jobs, finances, other commitments, illness or death.  It's likely that about two or three of your fellow Rotarians that you had lunch with last week will not be here a year from now.

The benefits to you of bringing in new members are numerous.  There will be more people to help in committees and on projects.  There will be more funds in the treasury to accomplish bigger and more meaningful projects.  New members bring in fresh new ideas.  They expand the base of people that you get to know through Rotary, enabling you to develop new friendships and business contacts.  Steve LeMond, Chairman of Membership Development, has many good ideas to help us along, but he can't do it himself.  He needs each one of you to sponsor at least one member this year.  You are a member of Rotary because you care and believe in the ideas of Rotary.  You probably joined because a friend invited you and you wanted to get involved and meet new people.  Share Rotary with a friend.

Last Week's Program

Glenn Trowbridge

The Most interesting Parttime Job in the World

Glen regaled club members with interesting stories and facts about being an internationl boxing judge. Glen reported that he is not a sports fan.A judge cannot afford to be swayed in one direction or another. Everything is viewed as the Red or Blue corner.

This is a lonely occumpation on the road. You can't fraternize with promoters, fighters because you will be acquised of bias.
The judge must thoroughly know the game and you are married
Thoroughly know the game. You may not bet, you can't wear t-shirts with names on them. nor make comments to the to thetee shirts. You cannot talk to the media - Judges can not solicit for tickets.

Scoring is a challenge. You cannot mix up the rules. Each round is scored as a separate flight; judging is done on all kinds of details of the match, no credit is given for wounds. There are techniques used by the judge to keep track. Glenn moves on a grid along his area of ringside.

Perspective is an important aspect for the boxing  judge. Announcers often misrepresent what is happening, because they have oly one perspective. Boxing places judges at different positions.around the ring
so that their combine scores dictates the outcome.
Judges decisions are monitored statistcally for predjudices: left over right handed, Black over white, Brit over Mexican,

News and Announcements

The Rotary International Convention is being held in New Orleans next year, May 21-25, 2011.  Good hotel accommodation near the Convention Center is going to go fast - a couple of places are already  sold out!  Dennis and I made reservations this past week at the Holiday Inn on Canal Street, two blocks from the Convention Center.

New Orleans is a major fun place to be and Rotarians from all over the world are going to take over the town.  It'd be really great if we had a good group going.  If you're thinking of attending, go onto the Rotary site and make your hotel reservations NOW (if you have to, you can cancel without penalty pretty late in the game).

GSE
I want to personally invite each and every one of the Southern Nevada Rotary leadership to recruit candidates for Group Study Exchange.

This year's trip is to Dubai, Egypt and Bahrain, from mid April to mid May, 2011.
We're now actively recruiting for Team Members.  Applicants must bebusiness and professional men and women ages 25 to 40 in their initial years of professional life. They must live or work in District 5300.  The ideal candidate is articulate, a team player, outgoing, responsible and respectful; loves their profession, and can serve as a great ambassador for Rotary, District 5300, and the United States of America.  Applications are at district5300.org (locate GSE in the left column of the home page under "Foundation.")  Applications must be submitted to me by August 31, 2010.
Expenses for the GSE trip are handled thusly:
·         The Rotary Foundation pays for transportation to and from District 5300
·         The host district provides accommodations, meals and transportation within the District
·         The Team Members pay for personal and incidental expenses (visas, travel within District 5300, logo wear etc) as well as any post-trip travel a member might select.

Please talk about this opportunity at your Clubs.  Print out an application and bring it with you at your meetings.
Call or e-mail  me with any questions.
THANK YOU!!

 On the Lite Side
One day God was talking to Adam and he said "Adam you look lonely, I know I'll give you a woman but it will cost you an arm and a leg."

Adam said " what can I get for a rib?"

The rest is history.
