| Club Administation
and the CLP
by Dennis
Filangeri |
 |
Once upon a time, there
were Four Avenues of Service: International, Community,
Vocational, and Club. All Rotarians around the globe were
governed by those principles to perform service above self.
Rotary club boards were not only guided and inspired by these
four mantras but board seats were named and reserved for each
Avenue.
But
then one day the Big Wheel on High realized this isn't the way
to run a business. The Four Avenues competed with each other,
and because of limited resources, the Four Avenues Directors
caused unfairness, ill will, and broken friendships amongst
the board. So the Big Wheel declared a new Club Leadership
Plan (CLP). Board members would not champion one or more of
the Four Avenues, but board members should be independent of
them to avoid conflicts of interest. The Four Avenues were
demoted from exalted board positions to club committees,
freeing the board to argue over more stately stuff. And that's
the way it is today. International Service, Community Service,
Vocational Service, and Club Service remain the four avenues,
but they now have their own chairs and committees to perform
the duties in keeping with the Rotary motto of Service Above
Self.
"But wait!" you say, "Who's the Club Service
committee and chair?"
Under the CLP, most of club service has been wrapped up
into club administration. This includes the program committee,
fellowship, public relations and bulletin, club finances and
fundraising, etc., etc., etc. The Club Administration Chair
needs to work with the club's standing committee chairs and
the Club Administration sub-committees to perform all the
tasks needed to make the club run more efficient and
effectively. For
more information about the Club Administration Committee and
the Club Leadership Plan, visit the RI website or view the manual
online by clicking here.
So far the plan has been working; there are a
few bumps, but those, too, will be smoothed
out. |

Fellow Rotarians:
Rotary has many acronyms. One in wide use
at this time of year is BODTS, short for Board of
Directors Training Seminars. Like Lynn and
me, you have probably received your own personal
invitation to attend BODTS. Apparently these
have been sent by email to all Rotarians in District
5300 by Cathy Raacke, the District Administrator.
As
Cathy noted, "This seminar is designed to assist
current, incoming, and potential Rotary Board members in
understanding the duties and responsibilities associated
with having a successful Board of Directors to guide
your Club.
All Rotarians are welcome to attend!"
For
the southern Nevada Rotarians, the seminar will be on
Saturday, January 30 at the Boyd School of Law at
UNLV.
Registration will start at 8:30 AM, and the
seminar itself will run from 9:00 AM to noon. Continental
breakfast will be served.
Five
topics will be covered at the seminar.
Robert's Rules of Order, including Do and Don'ts
of running effective club meetings
Defining Documents, including Club Charter, Club
Constitution, Club By-Laws, Club Code of Policy, and
Club Procedure Manual
Club Leadership Plan
Role and Responsibility of Board members and Club
Directors including Duty of Care, Duty of Loyalty, and
Duty of Obedience
The Law Pertaining to Raffles
Registration for BODTS is easy and your
attendance will be free. From the
District 5300 website, click on "Board of Directors
Training Seminars." Then click on
"On-Line Registration" and fill in the blanks as
appropriate.
For "Registration Fee is $20.00," there are three
options.
Click on the second of these, "Please invoice my
club." The
club will then pay for your BODTS attendance.
We
hope that many of you will attend BODTS on
Saturday.
What you learn can help you in your career as
well as enhancing your ability to serve as a Rotary
board member. Here too

Hands. |

News
and Announcements
Haiti
Relief - There was a discussion about our
club's involvement in the Haiti earthquake relief
efforts and whether we want to consider the immediate
need or the longer-term need.
The International Service
Committee, under the chairmanship of Edmee Marcek, met
and discussed various options. The committee
felt strongly that whatever project the club supports
should have strong ties to Rotary and Rotary
awareness.
The committee sent a recommendation to the Club
Board to purchase four Shelter
Boxes (at $1,000 each) to be sent to Haiti
immediately.
The Club board now has a motion before it to
accept the recommendation.
Guy and Jan
Lynch are personally contributing $1000.00 to the Haiti
relief effort and Guy challenged our members to match
their contribution, either individually or through our
club or foundation. The club
discussed other possible ways to help including
donations for matching grants, donating to organizations
such as the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. Many members
signed up at the meeting to pledge their giving in some
form.
Help
Needed for Three Square - On February 3, Sysco
is having an exhibition at Cashman Center. Following that,
Sysco is contributing everything to Three Square. Sysco needs at
least 15-20 people to gather the items and load the
truck at 5:30 at Cashman Center. If anyone would like to
do this in place of or in addition to packing food on
February 2, please let Jim
Cady (591-9113) know.
TA2R(sm)
- Susan Cooper reported that the Summit
Restaurant will be the venue for our fundraiser. She reminded us
that each of us is on a committee and it is time to get
geared up and get working.

Breaking News Story [Editor's Note: Please note
that this story is in the HUMOR section.]
Teacher
Arrested at JFK Airport by Security
A teacher was
arrested today at John F. Kennedy International Airport
as he attempted to board a flight while in possession of
a ruler, a protractor, a compass, a slide-rule and a
calculator.
At a morning
press conference, the Attorney General said he believes
the man is a member of the notorious Al-Gebra movement.
He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the
FBI with carrying weapons of math instruction.
'"Al-Gebra is a
problem for us," the Attorney General said. "They derive
solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on
tangents in search of absolute values." They use secret
code names like 'X' and 'Y' and refer to themselves as
"unknowns", but we have determined that they belong to a
common denominator of the axis of medieval with
coordinates in every country.
As the Greek
philanderer Isosceles used to say, 'There are 3 sides to
every triangle.'
When asked to
comment on the arrest, President Obama said, "If God had
wanted us to have better weapons of math instruction, he
would have given us more fingers and toes." White House
aides told reporters they could not recall a more
intelligent or profound statement by the President. It
is believed that the Nobel Prize for Physics will
follow. |
