Serving
the Community--BackPack for Kids
by Judith
Filangeri |
 |
On Tuesday
night, January 5th, cars gathered in a dark parking lot
outside a vast warehouse on North Pecos, home of Three Square
Food Bank.
Rotarians Jim Cady, Judith & Dennis Filangeri,
Glenn Trowbridge, Dennis Ortwein, Lynn & Richard Peterson,
Ken Coonrad, Jim White, Robert Bridel, Betty Mahalik, Spencer
Horn, along with wives and children and grandchildren and
friends, came to work on the BackPack for Kids Program, part
of the Three Square Childhood Nutrition Initiative.
About half the
children in the Clark County School District, about 140,000
students, participate in the "free and reduced meals"
program. But when
the school bell rings at the end of the day on Friday, many of
those children go hungry until school resumes on Monday
morning.
So each week, over 5,000 backpacks are prepared
at Three Square's giant warehouse, each backpack containing
single serving, child friendly, ready-to-eat food, things like
fruit cups, shelf-stable chocolate milk, franks and beans,
beef stew, cheese and crackers, and pudding cups. Each Friday, backpacks
go out to 185 schools to be given to kids who might otherwise
go without food during weekends.
We worked hard,
laughed a lot, and helped needy children in our
community.
There's no better definition of a successful community
service project.
And we're not done yet! Members who might want to
donate to Three
Square can do so on
line. Members who
want to join us in packing food so the kids don't go hungry
through the next weekend, join us on February 2nd at 4190 N.
Pecos at 5:30 pm.

Fellow Rotarians:
This
past Tuesday evening our Rotary Club participated in a
very rewarding hands-on event. We were helping
with the Three Square "BackPack for Kids" program.
The
following information describing Three Square and
"BackPack for Kids" is taken from the
www.threesquare.org web site.
"'BackPack for Kids' Program: In partnership
with the Clark County School District, Three Square
provides a bag of kid-friendly, shelf-stable foods to
children who lack adequate food over the weekend."
"Three Square is the valley's food hub; a
central location where donated and rescued food can be
collected and distributed. We provide
bakery, produce, dairy, non-perishable products and
ready-to-eat meals to non-profit and faith-based
organizations.
We also facilitate childhood and senior nutrition
programs.
We are a place for members of the community to
meet, serve and collaborate as part of the food
solution."
"A
national model project, Three Square is a community
collaborative partnership with the gaming industry,
businesses, non-profit agencies, food distributors,
UNLV, the CCSD, governmental entities, the media and
hundreds of volunteers to efficiently and effectively
serve hope to the hungry."
Three Square distributed 20.7 million pounds of
food in 2008.
Our
participation took place in Three Square's large, modern
warehouse at 4190 N Pecos Road. Starting at 5:30
PM, we worked in two "production lines" where we took
packaged food items from large containers and put them
in the super market type plastic bags. Items included
entrees in individual-serving cans, chocolate milk,
fruit juice, fruit cocktail, crackers, granola bars, and
cereal.
Other workers continually replenished the boxes
holding the items we were collecting.
The
participants represented all age groups from children to
older adults.
Most were young to middle aged adults. The atmosphere
was festive; people were happy to be there helping out
with this very worthwhile if somewhat strenuous
project. At
7:10 PM we were told that the work was completed for the
night, and we left with a good feeling that we had
assisted in a much needed community program.
Efforts such as this exemplify the Rotary motto
of "Service Above Self."

Future of Rotary is in Your
Hands. |

Week's Program
Speakers - Terri Janison presented
some facts about the Clark County School District.
Kelly Bucherie described the six Career
and Technical Academies, each of which offers coursework
associated with specific career pathways. There
are numerous and varied studies at each of these schools
including, but not limited to, the areas of law
enforcement, engineering, media, automotive technology,
computer forensics, web design, culinary arts, fashion
and interior design and computer animation. This really
was an interesting and informative program since many of
us had no idea these schools even existed.
Thanks to Lynn Peterson for her excellent note
taking in my absence!
