Rotary
Awareness Month by Dennis Ortwein
|
 |
There are many reasons for
expanding Rotary Awareness both within and beyond our own
membership. We can all list them. But here are
some tips for doing just that. Some we do; some we don't
do. VISIBILITY 1.
Display Rotary emblems, banners, and the Four Way Test at
project sites, events, and gateways to the
community. 2. Wear Rotary
pins as part of daily
attire. 3. Utilize PSA's and
other outreach tools available through R.I.'s Public Relations
Division.
PLANNING
1. Develop a list
of media outlets and key media contacts in the
community. 2. Build a PR
component into each project or
event. IMPLEMENTATION 1.
Prepare timely news releases on events, projects, and
speakers. 2. Write letters to
the editor to inform the community of activities/
accomplishments, and thank them for
support. 3. When working with
the media: 1) Approach them strategically; 2) Be brief
and to the point, 3) Use effective spokespersons, i.e.
articulate members and/or beneficiaries of Rotary
services. 4. Be sure the
story has news value---emphasizing how Rotary address
community/international needs.

On the
Lite Side
Politically Correct Holiday Greeting Best
wishes for an environmentally conscious, socially responsible,
low stress, non-addictive, gender neutral, winter solstice
holiday, practiced within the most joyous traditions of the
religious persuasion of your choice, but with respect for the
religious persuasion of others who choose to practice their
own religion as well as those who choose not to practice a
religion at all. Additionally, a fiscally successful,
personally fulfilling, and medically uncomplicated recognition
of the generally accepted calendar year 2000, but not without
due respect for the calendars of choice of other cultures
whose contributions have helped make our society great,
without regard to the race, creed, color, religious, or sexual
preferences of the wishes. (Disclaimer: This greeting is subject to clarification
or withdrawal. It implies no promise by the wisher to actually
implement any of the wishes for her/himself or others and no
responsibility for any unintended emotional stress these
greetings may bring to those not caught up in the holiday
spirit.)

A just distributed Rotary publication
provides a summary of Rotary International and Rotary
Foundation activities during the 2008-2009 Rotary
Year. This very colorful 36-page document is
titled "Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation
2008-09 Annual Report." This joint
report is signed by Dong Kurn Lee, 2008-09 President
Rotary International. It is also signed by
Jonathan B. Majiyagbe, 2008-09 Trustee Chair The Rotary
Foundation. It is available on the RI Website by
searching for "Annual Report 2008-09." In
the introductory part of the publication, there appear
two paragraphs which I think resonate as we think about
the relationship between our club and our
foundation. This annual report offers a
comprehensive look at how Rotary International and The
Rotary Foundation are working together to address some
of today's most critical issues. Most of the
world, and even many grassroots Rotarians, view RI and
its Foundation as simply an organization called Rotary,
not as two discrete organizations with separate
financial statements. Rotary International is
funded primarily by the dues received semiannually from
its 33,000 member clubs. The Rotary Foundation,
the philanthropic arm, is supported by contributions
from Rotarians, friends of Rotary, and corporations and
organizations that share Rotary's
goals. Yet the similar missions and
constituencies of the two organizations make it
impossible to think of one without the other.
Without a Foundation to harness resources and allocate
them where they can be most effective, Rotarians are
limited in their ability to serve. But without
Rotarian financial support and volunteer service, the
Foundation cannot exist. The Foundation has
developed a Future Vision Plan which identifies six key
areas of focus. Grants from 2004-09 in these areas
are listed below: 527 maternal and child
health grants awarded for $7,172,184 2,436
water and sanitation grants awarded for
$30,484,779 2,718 disease prevention and
treatment grants awarded for
$34,189,400 2,664 basic education and
literacy grants awarded for
$28,008,087 1,625 economic and
community development grants awarded for
$24,498,464 434 peace and conflict
prevention//resolution fellowships awarded for
$20,460,000 We are truly members of a great
organization. In this New Year we can remember
that The Future of Rotary is in Your
Hands. |

News
and Announcements
TA2R(sm) Auction Item Solicitation
- Jim Cady, Auction Chair for the 2010 TA2R
announces the following: It is that time
again; time to start soliciting gift certificates and
commitments for auction items for our 2010 fund raiser.
Click this link
for a form that ALL gift certificates and auction
items will need to have accompany the item, so we can
properly list it in the auction listing and give
appropriate recognition to the donor. It is not too
early to solicit commitments and certificates.
However, please make sure that gift certificates either
have no expiration or they expire one year from the
event, not when you get it. The event date is
tentatively May 7 so please try to get expirations at
least dated 4\30\11. The idea is to have 125 - 150
items, baskets, certificates and whatever you think
people will bid on. We need a large selection and
variety of items, no gift is too small because we will
group smaller items together to make a large item. You
can download the form from the website. Please
forward all items to myself for now, contact information
is noted at the bottom of the form, when giving the form
out for people to submit it to me please note your name
somewhere on the form. TA2R(sm)
Potential Sponsors - Steve LeMond asks all club
members to provide him with names and contact
information of potential sponsors. He reminds that
his committee will make the actual
contact. Punitaqui - Edmee
announced that about $400 was collected at the Holiday
Party for the Punitaqui Christmas Baskets
projects.
