Rotary
Family Month by Dennis Ortwein,
Feature Writer
|
 |
Do you remember when you were first introduced to the
concept of "family?" I do. In the first grade I
learned that the family was father-mother-brother-sister-and
Spot the dog. Even though my family had grown to five
children and a cat under the porch with no dog, the concept
had been planted. As we proceeded through the grades,
the concept of family expanded to the school, the church, the
neighborhood, the city, the state, the nation, and the
world. Extended family was the concept on which
Paul Harris and his friends founded Rotary. In 2003 R.I.
President Majiyagbe established the Family of Rotary Task
Force----to encourage districts and clubs to care for
Rotarians and their families. Its goals are to: 1)
Visit sick Rotarians and ensure their needs are being
met; 2) Promote membership retention;
3) Promote membership diversity; 4)
Encourage spouses, children, and parents to participate in
service projects; 5) Maintain relationships with
the families of deceased members and spouses; 6)
Support the families of deceased Rotarians in their times of
need; and 7) Encourage the families of deceased
Rotarians to continue being involved. Our club
carries out some functions suggested by the Task Force quite
well, and our monthly Firesides and our Website are second to
none. Still, we can strengthen our family concept
by: 1) Establishing a contact plan regarding concerns
(death, illness, etc.) and member situations between weekly
meetings; 2) Holding meetings at Rotarians businesses and
inviting guests; 3) Planning events to include family members
and friends; 4) Designating occasional meetings as Daughter's
Day, Son's Day, or Partner's Day; 5) Including family members
at significant events, i.e. new member inductions and
Paul Harris Fellowship awards; and 6) using family as an
element in our Classification search.

Our sister organization, The Las Vegas
Northwest Rotary Foundation, a 501(c)3 Charitable
Foundation, was founded in 2008. Since then the
foundation, rather than the club, has been responsible
for funding Community Service and International Service
projects proposed by our club or by the community at
large. There have been several changes in
the Foundation Governing Board in recent months.
Greg Sinacori is now the Foundation President, replacing
Jim White. Cliff Marcek is now the Foundation
Secretary, replacing Joe Germain. Jim Cady remains
in the position of Foundation
Treasurer. Other Club members are also
members of the Foundation Governing Board based on their
positions in the club. I am a member of the
Foundation Governing Board based on my current position
as Club President. Diane Cabral is a member based
on her being Club President Elect, and Glenn Trowbridge
is a member based on his being Club Projects Committee
Chairman. Finally, Linda Miyoshi is a
member of the Foundation Governing Board representing
the community. As our long-time members will
recall, Linda is a former member of our club and we
appreciate her willingness to serve in this
capacity. In addition to the Board, the
Foundation has four Standing Committees. These are
Grants, chaired by Susan Cooper, Investment, chaired by
Dennis Filangeri, Nominating, chaired by Jim White, and
Development, chaired by Greg
Sinacori. Additional information on the
foundation can be found on our club website by clicking
on "About Us" and "Foundation." This includes how
to donate to the foundation, past and present foundation
beneficiaries, and the membership of the foundation
committees. Foundation Documentation and
Local and International Project Grant Application Forms
are also available on the website. Doing
our part to insure the success of the foundation is
another example that The Future of Rotary is in Your
Hand |

the Rotary Club. This program is simple and
exciting. You can dine-in, pick up, or get
delivery. Their number is 478-5757. When placing your
order, you MUST mention that you are with the
LVNW Rotary Club in order to have your purchase
count towards the donation. Rosati's will keep track of
all purchases made on behalf of our Rotary Club. At the
end of the promotion, Rosati's will donate 10% of all
purchases of food and beverages made on behalf of the
LVNW Rotary Club. And as a BONUS Rosati's will also
include the same dollar amount of GIFT CARDS purchased
on behalf of the Rotary Club to the total dollars
earned. This only applies to the Cheyenne store.
Check out their
menu on their website. Click here for a letter you
can send to your family and friends to help make this

the actions being taken by the LVCVA tourism/community
