District Governor Tom
Novotny
by DM Filangeri |
|
|
"Howdy!" District Governor Tom
Novotny greeted our club and related events leading to his
"Rotary moment" when he went from being a member of Rotary to
becoming a Rotarian. Governor Tom emphasized the importance of
Rotary and Rotarians being part of the community through
hands-on involvement in community projects. He
told two stories of recent events in our community which
exemplified the meaning of "family of Rotary." The first story
was about Martin, a homeless man on the streets of Las Vegas,
who was saved by Rotary because of an inquiry by his brother,
a Rotarian in Clearwater Florida that was passed on to our
District and acted upon by Rotarians in Las Vegas. The other
story was about how a young exchange student from China,
Lydia, was saved from certain death in a drowning accident
because of the intervention of Rotarians from Phoenix and Las
Vegas. Three was nary a dry eye in the room. The
message: Rotary often does its greatest work by providing
hands on help where needed outside of one's comfort
zone.

Fellow Rotarians: The
visit to our club by our District Governor, Tom Novotny,
and his team was a cordial, rewarding, and inspiring
experience. For our board meeting on Monday,
November 9, the District Governor was accompanied by his
wife, Robin, District Governor Elect Roger Schulte, and
Group 11 Assistant Governor Robert
Bridel. The agenda for this board meeting
emphasized the provision of status reports on Membership
Development and Retention, Foundation Giving Goals and
Activities, Public Relations Goals and Activities,
Service Projects for Youth, Community, and International
Service, and Club
Administration. Implementation progress of
the Club Leadership Plan, State of the Operational and
Charitable Budgets, Fund Raising Activities, and
Participation in District Activities were also
discussed. The relationship between our club and
our foundation was also explored. The
visitors commented favorably on many aspects of our
activities including our Kideract Program, our
establishment of the Las Vegas Northwest Rotary
Foundation, and our International Service projects in
Chile. They also provided advice and responded to
numerous questions from board members. For
the club meeting on Tuesday, November 10, District
Governor Novotny was accompanied by District Governor
Elect Roger Schulte, Executive Assistant Governor Jeff
Manna, Assistant Governor Robert Bridel, and Executive
Aide to the District Governor Christine Smith.
District Governor Novotny presented PRLS
certificates and pins to Diane Cabral, Edmee Marcek and
Robert Bridel. He also inducted Robert Bridel as a
new Paul Harris Fellow. In his talk to the
club, Mr. Novotny told a personal story of how he
transitioned from being a member of a Rotary Club to
being a true Rotarian. He was informed that a
Rotary Club member in Florida had a brother who was
homeless and who needed help here in Las Vegas.
Tom and Robin located the man and offered him
assistance. Tom's Las Vegas West Rotary Club
became involved. The man was rehabilitated and was
invited to attend a meeting of the club. The man's
brother from Florida was also at the meeting. This
culminated in an emotional reunion of the two brothers
who hadn't seen each other for 40
years. The District Governor also urged our
members to attend the District 5300 Conference at Green
Valley Ranch Resort on June 10-13, 2010.

Last
Week's Program
District Governor Tom Novotny made his official
club visit last week after meeting with the Club's Board
of Directors on Monday evening. As part of
his official duties, Governor Tom presented a Paul
Harris Fellowship membership to Robert Bridel as well as
certificates of completion for the Potential Rotary
Leadership Seminar club member attendees: Robert Bridel,
Edmee Marcek, and Dianne Cabral. The
District Governor also reminded us of the importance of
the PolioPlus campaign and shared how the Polio Pig can
be put to use to educate the community about Polio,
raise funds to eradicate Polio, and to attract new
members to Rotary who are community and service minded.
And don't forget to bring the Polio Pig to the District
Conference in Green Valley on June 10 to see the pig
fly. District Governor Tom then gave a
motivational talk about his Rotary beginnings and his
discovery of the true meaning of Rotary. See featured
article.

On the
Lite Side
The USGA would like to inform all golfers there is
a possibility of MAJOR rule changes to the game of golf. This is only
a preview as the complete rule book is being written
now. Here are a couple of basic
changes. Golfers with
handicaps: - below 10 will have their green
fees increase by 35% - between 11 and 18
will see no increase in green fees - above
18 will play for free and even get a check from the
club/course played The $ amount put in for
bets will be as follows: -for handicaps
below 10, an additional $10 -between 11 and
18, no additional amount -above 18, you
will receive the total amount in the pot and you do not
even have to play. The term "gimme putt"
will be changed to "entitlement" and will be used as
follows: -handicaps below 10, no
entitlements -handicaps above 11 to 17,
entitlements for putter length
putts -handicaps above 18, if on green, no
need to ever putt, just pick it up These
entitlements are intended to bring about fairness in
scoring so that the final scores of all players will be
about the same. In addition, a player will
be limited to a max of one birdie and/or six pars. Any
excess must be given to those fellow players who have
not yet scored a birdie or par. Only after all players
have received a birdie or par from the player making the
birdie or par, can that player begin to count his score
again. The current USGA handicap system
will be used for the above purposes but the term "net
score" will be available only for scoring those players
with handicaps 18 and above. This is
intended to "redistribute" the success of winning by
making sure that in every competition the above 18
handicap players will post only "net score" against
every other player's gross score. These new
rules are intended to CHANGE the game of golf. Golf must
be about Fairness Only; it should have nothing to do
with Ability.
