Side
LITTLE HISTORY LESSON - Courtesy of Dennis
Ortwein [Editor's Note: Some of
this is apocryphal but makes a great story, don't you think?
If it isn't quite this way, it certainly should
be!] In the past, personal hygiene
left much room for improvement. As a result many women
and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women
would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out
their complexions. When they were speaking to each
other, if a woman began to stare at another woman's face she
was told 'mind your own bee's wax'. Should the woman
smile, the wax would crack, hence the term 'crack a smile' or
when they sat too close to the fire the wax would melt and the
expression 'losing
face.'

Fellow Rotarians: This
week we welcome District Governor Tom Novotny for the
annual official visit to our club by the District 5300
Governor. District Governor Nominee Roger Schulte,
Executive Assistant Governor, Southern Nevada Jeff
Manna, Group 11 Assistant Governor Robert Bridel, and
Executive Aide to the District Governor Christine Smith
will accompany District Governor
Novotny. District Governor Novotny is an
owner of Arrowhead Printing and a member of the Las
Vegas West Rotary Club. District Governor Nominee
Schulte is a retired educator and a member of the Upland
California Rotary Club. The delegation will
participate in two events at our club. First will
be our club board meeting at the Reynolds Foundation on
Monday, November 9th from 5:00 until 6:00
PM. For the board meeting, we will be using
a suggested meeting agenda provided by Executive Aide
Smith. Initially, we will welcome
the delegation and introduce those present. This
will be followed by a brief overview of the club
including: Membership Development and Retention,
Foundation Giving Goals and Activities, Public Relations
Goals and Activities, Service Projects for Youth,
Community, and International Service, and Club
Administration. Implementation progress of
the Club Leadership Plan, State of the Operational and
Charitable Budgets, Fund Raising Activities, and
Participation in District Activities will be
described. We will answer the central
question of "How will club members remember this
year?" Finally, District Governor Novotny will
provide closing comments and answer questions.
For our club meeting on Tuesday, November
10th, we will follow our usual routine. District
Governor Novotny will be our speaker. All members
are encouraged to invite guests and potential Rotarians
to this meeting. Here too The
Future of Rotary is in Your

News
and Announcements
Board of Directors -
President-elect and several directorships are
open. If you have an interest in serving, please
let Diane know. TA2R(sm) - Susan gave
an update. The committee met 11/2 at Steve L's
house (thank you, Steve). The WMC has offered us a
contract for the event to take place in their World View
Room on May 7th and has waived the room fee. The
committee is working through some details. Final
decision should be made by Friday, 11/13. Guy is
working on the primary fundraising option. Steve
and Spencer are working on
sponsorship. Wine Raffle -
Lynn distributed tickets to be sold and is looking for
people willing to visit other clubs to sell
tickets. Tickets are $20. First prize will take
away 60 (SIXTY) bottles of wine, with 2nd taking 25 and
3rd taking 15. You can also buy tickets on our
website. Just click
here.
Kideract - Guy asks
those members who've volunteered to check the Kideract
calendar on our website to confirm their
participation dates.
Pizza for PolioPlus Fundraiser -
Rosati's restaurant/pizza parlor 10030 W Cheyenne
(& Hualapai) is having a grand reopening on
Friday, November 13th at 1:30 pm. Why should we
care, you ask? Well, Rosati's is offering to host
a fundraiser for us. On a date of our choosing,
for every customer who identifies themselves as
representing the LVNW Rotary Club, Rosati's will
contribute a fixed amount to our club. We were
thinking of a mini-fund raiser for PolioPlus. Stay
tuned for more information. Richard and Lynn Peterson
will be going to the grand opening and would love to
have other club members join them.
We Have A Winner! - Joe
won the raffle today! No one can doubt that we
have a very lucky club!
