Hands-On Service Projects Sought
by Glenn Trowbridge

Glenn Trowbridge
Our Rotary Club has a reputation of community involvement through "hands on projects."  We have enjoyed helping our community with projects like the one recently completed at Safe Nest, which involved the painting of their collection bins a lovely shade of purple.  Many of us still have jeans with the evidence of our participation.  Most of us remember working on our tans while renovating the playground for NALA.

Participation in these projects is often motivated by the members' knowledge of and support for the particular non-profit we are helping.

Our commitment to helping construct the Miracle Ball Field is still strong, but our part of the project is a bit delayed.  The actual construction of the ball fields will not be ready for our finishing touches for a few more months.

Right now we are now looking for a few Community Service Projects for consideration.  The types of projects we enjoy are work projects that we can complete in 4 or 5 hours with about 20 volunteers.  Projects that result in an immediate end result are most gratifying.  In the past we have been able to bring our own hand tools, and the club may be able to help with some basic materials. Our members are most available on Saturday mornings.

Do you have any knowledge of potential projects?  If so, please contact Glenn Trowbridge at our next meeting or call him at 363-2183 with your ideas. The more details you have (when, where, what, how much etc), the better.

President's Message

President Richard PetersonFellow Rotarians:

Our monthly board meeting took place last Tuesday, October 13th.  Some highlights are as follows.

Treasurer Lynn Mosier reported that the club balance sheet shows $10,807 owed by Las Vegas Northwest Rotary Foundation to the club.  Since this money is not expected to be repaid, Lynn is considering steps to remove it from our books.

Membership Committee Chair Jerry Sligar reported that he is compiling a classification list specific to our club.  This will be used in our member recruitment efforts.  For member retention, Jerry is continuing to follow up with members who have not been attending our club meetings.

Lynn Mosier reported on the status of the raffle for 100 bottles of wine.  Wine is being collected from members and tickets to sell will be available by the first week in November.  The wine raffle committee will consider having three winners rather than awarding all 100 bottles to one winner.

Various aspects of fundraising were discussed.  I repeated the thought that it is a good idea for us to support the fundraising efforts of other clubs, such as the North Las Vegas club's dinner on October 24th.  Judith Filangeri proposed that we consider using some club funds to help members to attend such events, but this proposal was not voted upon.

Secret Word: "Hands On"Several board members endorsed the idea that we should do more hands-on community service projects such as helping with the proposed Miracle Ball Field.   An item has been placed in the newsletter (see Rotary Information: Hands On Service Projects Sought) asking for ideas for such projects.

Also, we are nearly out of banners and an order has been placed for 50 banners of the present design.  President Elect Diane Cabral has been appointed to be our Club Awards Chair.  District Governor Tom Novotny will be visiting our club on November 10th.

Our Annual Meeting will be on November 17th for the purpose of electing club officers for the next Rotary year.  Diane Cabral will head the nominating committee.

Santa Clothes will take place on December 3rd   Our club board is recommending to our foundation that we sponsor ten children for this event again this year.

Service above self by all of our members will help us to reach our goals.  In this way "The Future of Rotary is in Your Hands."
