’Round the Wheel
July 15, 2007
It was like we had two club meetings on Tuesday,
the attendance at the board meeting was so great. Not only that, the
enthusiasm and helpfulness of all who participated was super. We have
approved a budget for the year and have set plans in motion to do the following:
- Ensure that all Chairs have started
the process of rounding out their committees and begun developing goals and
action plans to achieve them.
- Initiated steps to incorporate our
club and to develop a plan for forming a 501C3, not for profit, foundation.
- Purchase a projector for the speakers
to use.
We want everyone to participate. Plan
to purchase advertising on the placemats that will be coming out soon.
Volunteer for at least one and consider two committees where you can have
input. Offer to hold a Fireside Chat at your home. The opportunities
for service are there!
Join us to ensure our club demonstrates how
ROTARY SHARES!

Atomic Testing Museum – The
Atomic Testing Museum is an
affiliate of the Smithsonian. Ellen Leigh, Curator of Education, told
us about some of the great exhibits, including the Ground Zero Theater where
one can experience a nuclear test (about as close as you ever really want
to get). Almost 1,000 tests, above and underground, were done at the Nevada
site, the last “critical test” in 1992. The site still does “sub-critical”
tests, but also serves as a training site for emergency preparedness first
responders, teaching them how to deal with things like dirty bombs.
Maggie Smith, the museum's Director of Marketing, also noted that the facility
is available for an evening of dinner plus tour.
Visiting Rotarians and Guests
Gary Chapin visited from the North Las Vegas
Club.
Zenaida Vibar, of
Zenaida Fashion Designs, came as
a guest of Darrell Cavanaugh.
Other News and Announcements
Kideract –
Ronzone Elementary School’s Kideract program
ended with a bang. Nevada State Senator Steven Horsford was the speaker.
The goal of Kideract is to bring in professionals from government, academia,
and business, as well as visiting foreign students, to help impress and motivate young
students to set goals and achieve academically, stressing the importance of
education. This was a great end to a great year.
July is
World
Rotaract Month. Rotaract is a Rotary-sponsored service club
for young men and women ages 18 to 30. Rotaract clubs are usually community-based
or university-based and are sponsored by a local Rotary club making them true
"partners in service" and key members of the Rotary family. Rotaract
is a great way for younger professionals to get a true taste of the satisfaction
that comes from Service Above Self. [As all who heard her Craft Talk
know, that’s how Angela B. came to Rotary.]
