Even Zorro Started Young: Frank Van Dyke,
Director/Head Coach of the Red Rock Fencing Center, assisted
by Beth Juliar, Saber, Epee and Foil Coach, gave an
informative presentation and fast-paced demonstration. First
blood was theoretical rather than literal and did not actually
involve any Rotarians. Fencing is intellectually stimulating
and appropriate for all ages (yes, that means YOU).

| President's Message |
Cliff was out of town (actually in London!), so we’ve got a
quote from RI President 2002-03, Bhichai Rattakul.
“I believe we can change the world, one life at a time. No
project is too small or insignificant, especially to those who
benefit. My hope is that these seeds of service will blossom
and live on for countless generations to come.”

NALA: On Saturday, March 10th, NALA held its first
press conference at its facility at 323 N Maryland Parkway.
Fox News Channel 5, and newspapers El Mundo and El Tiempo sent
reporters. Team member Paul Workman of the Las Vegas Northwest
Rotary Club was interviewed and gave a report of our needs and
our progress in fluent Spanish. Randy Bulloch, owner of Alpine
Steel Company, had a crew on the playground to weld some
safety bars on the handrails, which was the last step in
bringing the area into compliance. This process could not have
been accomplished without the generosity of Mr. Bulloch and
his highly professional crew.
This successful media event is the first step in Phase II
of our project to give the school a safe area for the children
to play in. Glenda Faila, our project manager, has submitted a
budget in the area of $150,000 to fund the needed upgrades,
which includes, new equipment, safety surfacing. landscaping,
security fencing, and a general refurbishing of the facility.
In addition, NALA now has its
own website courtesy of Dennis Filangeri member and web
master of the Las Vegas Northwest Rotary Club. This site is
the primary source of information about NALA and will become a
place where anyone can go to make a donation. NALA's needs and
wish list will be posted here.
In addition to the Rotary Club and the Nevada Association
of Hispanic Real Estate Professionals, the Las Vegas Latin
Chamber of Commerce has signed on as a partner and will
provide a free booth at its April Expo as well as additional
support where needed. We also have several Boy Scout Troops
who are interested in helping or using it as a project to earn
merit badges. So our efforts have truly become a community
project which will ultimately take on a life of its own to
provide services to working parents who need a highly
educational and safe environment for their children while at
work.

Internet Fraud: There has been an increase in e-mail
scams and other forms of Internet fraud targeting Rotarians or
abusing Rotary information. The latest wave of e-mail scams,
brought to RI's attention by Rotarians who received messages,
includes an e-mail that falsely claims to be from the BMW
Group. The scam is especially confusing because it uses the
likeness and apparent signature of 2005-06 RI President
Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar. The message text usually
congratulates the recipient for winning and asks for
recipients to verify their information.
RI is aware of these schemes and encourages Rotarians to be
vigilant about deleting any e-mail that appears suspicious.
Rotary International does not solicit funds via e-mail, nor
does it request that personal information be updated via
e-mail or other electronic means. Visit FraudWatch
International Web site to learn more about this type of
fraud.
