    President's Message
Pres Cliff Then Came the Enemy
“The enemy is patient and farseeing; he bides his time. There's a time to wait and a time to strike. The time to strike has frequently been called the "zero hour," sometimes the "psychological moment."

He came, not noisily, boisterously, because to have done so would have been to defeat his cause. The enemy was clothed in the wisdom of years, possessed of the cunning of the fox. He was no mean enemy.

He crept stealthily into the homes of men of all walks of life, the homes of poets, ministers, law makers, historians and philosophers and also into the homes of peasants, seamen, bricklayers and draymen; he even managed to elude the guards and to slip through the doors of penitentiaries and alms houses. The enemy was in fact almost omnipresent; almost omnipotent; the only place he dared not go was into the graves of dead men.

The wisdom of waiting for the psychological hour is manifest when one remembers it takes time to fill granaries, erect factories, grow trees, build churches, colleges and universities. When the psychological hour arrives, the product of all of these institutions will be needed, sorely needed. Intolerance may be vice or virtue, dependent upon what it is directed against. Intolerance of intolerance is a virtue. War may be either vice or virtue; the most virtuous war is the war against war.”
    - Message to the Pacific Rotary Conference at Tokyo, Paul P. Harris on October 1928

Spring Fest News Jim Cady reports that we now have 98 sold\committed tickets and only three weeks left to sell the other 152 to hit our goal of 250. We will be limited on how much we can do as a club if we don’t raise the necessary funds - that means 250 people and a lot more auction items. We need restaurant, show and attraction certificates. We need gift baskets, artwork, jewelry, services and anything else that can be used as a silent or live auction item.

We need people to go to the other clubs and solicit sales to the event. Go to the website to see clubs and dates that still need a visit. The goal is to beat last year’s fund raiser. We are counting on everyone participating.

If you need a receipt to give to donors, you can download one from the download center.

Kideract Walter Mains, computer resource room teacher at Booker Elementary, wrote to thank Dennis F. and the LV Rotary for the time and effort it took to bring an educational and interesting addition to the Booker students' education.

Dennis worked with students to create web pages using Microsoft Word. These pages have been published on the Booker web site. Click on the link to see their efforts. We are planning a follow-up in May.

NALA The NALA project is moving along nicely. They are now working on PHASE 2. One of the first things they did was to get their own URL http://nala-lv.org so they can kick off their marketing campaign.

Glenda Failla, project coordinator, outlined her plans for the new playground and included renderings of the equipment to be installed. The total project will run in the area of $150,000 and will included a new security fence, new safety surfacing under the equipment, landscaping and painting of the outside of the facility. A garden area will be set aside for the children to grow vegetables. Our own, Paul Workman is the leading the fundraising efforts and the effort to partner with civic officials, Latin business groups and local business owners. He also issued a press release and set up a photo op with several Las Vegas news agencies for this Saturday morning at NALA.

    Rotary Information

Literacy: The Rotary theme for March is literacy. Literacy empowers people. It is the foundation for virtually all forms of education and an essential component of poverty reduction, social inclusion, and economic development. Despite the importance of literacy, there are over 800 million people unable to read or write in the world today, and 64 percent of these people are women and girls. Read RI President Boyd's message on literacy here.

Ambassadorial Scholar Hope Herron is an incoming Ambassadorial Scholar, representing the Boulder City, NV Rotary Club. For her scholarship year she studied Natural Resource Management at the University of Queensland, Australia. Her thesis work involving policy recommendations to address wetland loss in coastal Louisiana helped propel her into her current job as an environmental scientist at a consulting firm in Baton Rouge, LA. Previously, Hope worked at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholar’s Environmental Change and Security Program; obtained a Master’s in International Communications at American University; worked as an environmental educator at Lake Mead NRA; and collected sediment samples in Belize, Central America.
