Terri Janison, guest of Dennis Ortwein

    President's Message
    Pres Cliff

"Since the beginning of civilization, there has been a surplus of sayers of things. If there is any one particular in which I would have Rotary distinguished from other organizations, it is in the quality of character which results in the doing of things."
Paul Harris, Message to the 1921 RI Convention in Edinburgh, Scotland.

    Membership

President Cliff ceremoniously graduates two members from the LVNW Rotary Young Eagle Society.

Angela Brooks and Brian Simmons have completed the rigorous rites of initiation and have had the Scarlet YES removed from their name badges. The Young Eagle Society (YES) is our club's way of introducing new members of Rotary to Rotarian ideals, service above self, The Four Way Test, and the Objects of Rotary.

    Congratulations to Angela and Brian.

Program alumni are an untapped source of members.

Every year, Rotary International and The Rotary Foundation invest significant amounts of time and money in their programs. In 2004-05, Rotary clubs and districts provided leadership training for more than 20,000 young people through Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA), supported about 410,000 service-minded youth in Interact and Rotaract clubs, and provided study-abroad opportunities for more than 10,000 students and young professionals through Rotary Youth Exchange, Ambassadorial Scholarships, and Group Study Exchange (GSE).

These programs not only attract the best and brightest young people but also produce individuals committed to leadership, service, and international understanding. Often, the people who participate in these programs become contributing members of their communities and share the values they learned in Rotary with the rest of the world.

Because of their dedication to Rotary's values, these program alumni could make great Rotarians. They are already more familiar with Rotary than the average prospective club member, and their participation in Rotary's programs indicates that they are interested in the organization's objectives. Why not capitalize on their experience with Rotary and get a return on the investment by keeping them involved in Rotary as club members?

    Rotary Information

Family January's theme is Family. Fellowships are great international clubs for Rotarians and their families with similar interests. Clubs go from accountants through yoga with all stops in between. We belong to International Hosting. And there are Action Groups as well! Check them all out here: www.rotary.org/programs/fellowships/index.html

    NALA Update
    From Paul Wexler
In an effort to get the playground open as soon as possible, we need two things accomplished. The porch railings still need the metal safety sheeting to be cut and welded, and the chain link fence on either side of the gate needs to be adjusted so that the slats will go in on the vertical. Rotary International Fair of Projects
    January, San Carlos Mexico

The annual Rotary International Fair of Projects will be held in San Carlos, Mexico on January 19-21.

This is a great opportunity to learn more about other club projects and to get ideas and partners for internation projects.

    Have You Seen This Rotarian?

This Rotarian has been wandering around for a while, but no one has seen her in years. You probably have a hidden Rotarian in you too. Let's bring them out. Announcing our Beautiful Baby Contest. Over the next few weeks we will collect your favorite childhood images. Everyone will have an opportunity to identify the Rotarian hidden in the picture.

There will be a prize given to the person who can correctly identify the most "Rotarians in the Rough" as well as a prize for the picture of the Rotarian who has been identified the least--no telling anyone which is your picture.

Any picture of you, black and white, or color, print, slide, or digital can be used. We will scan prints and slides if you like and return the pictures in the same condition in which you presented them. Pictures must be of you from high school age or younger (sorry no sonograms or X-rays). You may enter up to three pictures--this often confuses the contestants. Bring your pictures in an envelope to the next meeting or email them to webmaster@rotarysummerlin.org
