    Ponderism

I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes.

    Last Week's Program

Dr. Carlos Campo, Dean of Arts & Letters at CCSN, gave us an update on the state of education in Las Vegas. While there are many good teachers, there are many poor ones. Students entering college are mostly unprepared. Programs such as our Kideract program go a long way towards motivating youngsters to get a good education to be successful in life.

    Visiting Rotarians and Guests
    Empty Chair

There's no fellowship in an empty chair.
Your guests and visiting Rotarians help kindle the flame of fellowship

    No guests this week.

    President's Message
    Pres Cliff

In July, as our new President, I received (and my wife and fellow Rotarian translated) congratulations from the newly sworn in President of the Punitaqui Rotary Club, Mr. Jose Ariel Araya. Of course I responded, congratulating Jose Araya as well, and noting that, although the Punitaqui club is small, the club has a lot of talent, vision and energy.

I also encouraged the Punitaqui Club to, "include the ladies in all club activities; they are an invaluable resource to your club and the community.”

A month and a half later, Edmee and I received a phone call from Jose Araya, telling us that the Punitaqui Rotary Club has agreed to include “the ladies” as active Rotarians instead of the ladies auxiliary, as they had been until now. That's great news!

    Membership

    Book Review by Dennis Filangeri
Frank Talk II: How to Improve Membership Retention and Energize your Rotary Club by Frank J. Devlyn 2004, ReachForward Publishing Group, $12.95 www.ReachForward.com www.FrankDevlyn.org

Frank Devlyn, past RI President (2000-2001) has done it again. The sequel to Frank Talk: How YOU can Make a Difference in Your Career, Your Community, and Your World Through Membership in Rotary (2001, ReachForward Publishing Group), goes to the next level in Frank Talk II.

Frank Talk II is a quick and easy must-read for every club president and membership chair. It addresses the problems every club faces in membership retention by going to the heart of the matter regarding why people leave Rotary: lack of interest, unmet expectations, time and cost. Not only will you hear yourself saying, “Uh-huh,” “Right,” and “Of course,” but you’ll get some solid practical advice as how to nip these problems in the bud.

If you’re not yet a president-elect or membership chair, read this book anyway. It will help you invigorate your club, increasing your interest in Rotary, helping to meet your expectations, and help you find the time and resources to make Rotary a major part of your life.

    Rotary Information

Kideract: John Krakauer reports that Kideract started at Ronzone Elementary this week. This is a voluntary after-school program. To our surprise, there were somewhere between 30 and 40 students to participate in Larry Brown's presentation, "Making a Good First Impression."

On Monday Ron Kirsh presented to Mrs. Podoll's 5th grade class of 25 students at Booker Elementary School. He talked about advertising and the art of being able to quickly devise a pitch.

A great week impacting the lives of more than 50 young people!

LVAAC: Wenlee Jensen is working on a community service project involving the LVAAC. Click here for more information.
